I found this hike last month in my Country Walking magazine and last Saturday we decided to do it.

Whinlatter Forest is part of the English Forests that are protected and maintained by Forestry Commission England. Whinlatter Forest is the only mountain forest in England and home to rare species such as red squirrels and ospreys. Inside the shop screens show in real time the nest of ospreys. Osprey were very present in the United Kingdom but in the 19th and early 20th century they were persecuted for their eggs and skins and disappeared in 1840 from England. Some specimens remained present in Scotland until the middle of the 21st century. In 1954 ospreys from Scandinavia settled in the Highlands of Scotland. Thanks to the efforts of the protection associations the osprey population reached 14 pairs in 1976 and would be between 200 and 300 nowadays throughout the UK. It was not until 1999 that a pair of Scottish Osprey decided to nest in the Bassenthwaite area of Lake District.

Whinlatter Forest also contains Go Ape park and a dozen of hiking and mountain bike trails for the whole family. It has become a touristy place but if you go in the morning it shouldn’t be too busy, especially if you do the hike that I propose.

This hike is quite easy because there is no steep slope. The 340 meters of altitude are nicely done on the first 4 kilometers. It is this constant climb that can be a little difficult but once arrived at Lord’s seat the trail remains flat or goes down. The descent of Barf to the forest is a little steep as one side overlook the void but nothing very dangerous if you pay attention.

Here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • From the car park, go towards the visitor center and follow the path marked in green. Follow this trail for a while until you reach an intersection where you will have to leave the green path on the right (small path that goes up at around 2 km from the start of the walk) for a wider path on the left.
  • This trail follow the base of Seat How. Continue on this path until you reach another intersection. Turn left towards Lord’s seat. Pass the fence and follow the right path towards Lord’s seat.
  • On the summit of Lord’s seat take one of the two trails down to Barf. Once at the top of Barf take the path that goes down towards the forest. Pass the fence and follow the wide path to the car park.

We were very surprised by this hike as we were not expecting to have these wonderful views of the Bassenthwaite Valley and Derwentwater. We loved this hike.

  1. I’ve looked down on the Whinlatter forest from Grisedale Pike, but never walked through it. Barf and Lord’s Seat are very high on my to do list.
