Gawthorpe Hall is a country house located around 1 hour north of Manchester. Originally only the tower was built as protection against Scottish invasions in the 14th century. Then in 1600 the tower was improved by building a house around it, which gave the current shape. In the 1850s the house was re-decorated by the architect Sir Charles Barry designer of the Parliament of London. The literary people now know Gawthorpe Hall because of Charlotte Brönte, famous English author, who came to visit her friends living in this place.

Nowadays it is possible to visit the house and gardens surrounding it. There is an exhibition on the history of Charlotte Brönte and her relationship with the residents of Gawthorpe Hall. There is also a large collection of textiles that was collected by the last resident of the house Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth.

This place is nice to visit, especially the fabric collection, which is very interesting. The garden is small and the visit will only take you 1 to 2 hours. We would therefore recommend Gawthorpe Hall for people who would like to take a quick walk on a Sunday morning or who would like to stop between two destinations.

Gawthorpe Hall est une maison de campagne située à environ 1h au nord de Manchester. A l’origine seul la tour fut construite comme protection contre les invasions écossaises au 14ème siècle. Puis en 1600 la tour fut entourée d’une maison pour donner la forme actuelle. Dans les années 1850 la maison fut re-décoré par l’architecte Sir Charles Barry designer du Parlement de Londres. Gawthorpe Hall est maintenant connu des littéraires car Charlotte Brönte, célèbre auteure anglaise, est venu visiter ses amis habitant cet endroit.

De nos jours, il est possible de visiter la maison et les jardins l’entourant. Il y a une exposition sur l’histoire de Charlotte Brönte et de ses rapports avec les habitants de Gawthorpe Hall. Il y a également une grande collection de textiles qui fut collectée par la dernière habitante de la maison Rachel Kay-Shuttleworth.

Cet endroit est agréable à visiter, surtout la collection de tissu qui est très intéressante. Le jardin est petit et la visite ne vous prendra que 1 à 2 heures. Nous recommanderions donc Gawthorpe Hall pour les gens qui voudraient faire une rapide promenade un dimanche matin ou qui voudraient faire un arrêt entre deux destinations.
