Visit of Brean Down, National Trust – Somerset, England

Matthieu still had few days to take by the end of the year so we decided to visit the South of England. We booked an Airbnb on the border between Cornwall and Devon. From Manchester it takes about 5 hours. To cut the road in half we took a break at Brean a small village next to Weston Super Mare to visit Brean Down.

Brean Down is a former military base overlooking the Bristol Channel. A first fort: the Palmerston Fort was built on this peninsula to protect the country against Napoleonic invasions.

Then during the Second World War Brean Down was used to destroy enemy planes due to its platform that could hold six machine guns.

This base even served as a scientific base for the development of weapons for war. Thus, Brean Down has a very important military background.

But Brean Down is now a very nice place to walk because of the magnificent views over Bristol and the surrounding area. The visit is quite fast about 1h – 1h30 round trip from the car park. We arrived there around 15h when the sun began to set on the sea, which made this place even more magical.

For more information see the National Trust website. Free parking for members otherwise £ 3.50 for the day.
