We often walk to Peak District because we think that it is the closest to Manchester and the nicest. But in truth there are plenty of other places in the north of Manchester that are as beautiful and as close as Peak District and especially the Forest of Bowland or the Yorkshire Dales. For more hiking ideas I bought the book 100 walks in lancashire and it was in this one that I found today hike.

Rufford Old Hall is one of the properties of the National Trust that we needed to visit so when I saw that in my book there was a hike that passed not far from this property I thought it was the best time to do both in the same day. I love to go hiking and visit at the same time a place, that’s what we did with the Lyme Park in Stockport.

Read about our visit to Lyme Park here.

This hike leaves from the parking of Mere Sands Wood Nature Reserve. This 42-hectare nature reserve is a refuge for birds and insects. It is possible to stroll through the woods of the reserve and observe the birds in the huts made available for the visitors. This place is very nice and relaxing. I could have spent the afternoon watching the birds.

After seeing a few birds, we headed for Rufford Old Hall. The trail is fairly flat and easy to follow. It follows for a while the canal that goes from Leeds to Liverpool. This path is very relaxing and if you are lucky enough you might see some barges. There is also a cute barge village to see. The trail leaves the canal to go to the village of Rufford before arriving at the manor.

Rufford Old Hall was built in 1530 by Sir Robert Hesketh. It would seem that Shakespeare did a play in this house. The architecture of this building is Tudor style. It is possible to visit the interior of the mansion and to stroll in the vast park. During our visit we were able to hear someone from the National Trust playing the piano. This moment was very touching.

After have a lunch in the Rufford Old Hall gardens, we headed back to the car and continued along the canal. This hike is not very hard and offers beautiful views on the canal. This part is far more agricultural; we have crossed fields of beans and salads, than Peak District but the landscape is still nice.

Here are the steps to do this hike:

  • After visiting the reserve, exit in the direction of Cousins Lane that you cross to find yourself on a small path that goes in the direction of Brick Kiln Lane. Cross Brick Kiln Lane and take the trail that follows the stream. Cross Sluice Lane and continue until you reach the A59;
  • Cross the A59 and take the trail that follows the canal. Follow it for a while. You have to pass the marina. Leave the canal and head towards Diamond Jubilee Road;
  • Follow Church Road then right onto Liverpool Road. Continue to Rufford Old Hall;
  • To leave, take Liverpool Road, and take the first small road on the right to cross the canal. Follow the canal to the A581. Then take Spark lane. Continue on Croston Dr. Continue straight on towards Mere Sands Wood. You will find yourself on Holmeswood Rd then on Sandy way and then crossing fields you will arrive at the reserve Mere Sands Woods.

To end the day, I advice you to stop by  Frederick’s ice cream parlour in Chorley.
