A lovely circular walk from the popular village of Edale to Grindslow Knott summit in the Peak District National Park. Dog friendly.

This year we decided to watch the Perseids meteor shower that passed over Peak District in August. With some friends we wanted to hike during the afternoon and stay late at night in Peak District to observe the stars. We thought that a good place would be around Mam Tor. 

Cette année nous avons décidé d’aller observer la pluie de météorite Perseids qui passait au dessus de Peak District en août. Avec des amis nous avions envi de faire une randonnée l’après midi et de rester tard dans la nuit à Peak District pour observer les étoiles. Nous nous sommes dit qu’un bon endroit serait vers Mam Tor.

So we decided to do a hike from the village of Edale. Edale is a small touristic village not far from Mam Tor (one of the highest peaks of Peak District) and at the foot of Kinder Scout. Since we were a group with people more or less beginners in hiking we had chosen a fairly easy trail but with some tricky parts in the middle.

Nous avons donc choisi de faire une randonnée qui partait du village de Edale. Edale est un petit village touristique non loin de Mam Tor (un des plus hauts sommets de Peak District) et au pied de Kinder Scout. Vu que nous étions un groupe avec des personnes plus ou moins débutantes en randonnée nous avions choisi un parcours assez facile mais avec quelques passages un peu difficile.

This hike was very pleasant and ended with some scrambling in order to reach the top of the summit. For those who did not wish to scramble they were able to take the hiking trail that goes to the top. At the top a 360 ° view of the English countryside was waiting for us. We all loved this hike, which is definitely worth it.

Cette randonnée fut très agréable et finissait par un peu d’escalade pour arriver en haut du sommet. Pour ceux qui ne souhaitaient pas escalader ils ont pu emprunter le chemin de randonnée qui va jusqu’au sommet. En haut une vue à 360° sur la campagne anglaise nous attendait. Nous avons tous adoré cette randonnée qui vaut vraiment la peine de se surpasser.

After the hike we stopped by the Old Nags Head for some drinks and food while waiting for the night to fall. We then took the cars to park at the foot of Mam Tor and observe the stars. The sky was fairly clear that night and we could observe some meteorites. Unfortunately a few minutes before the shower peak, the clouds arrived and prevented us from observing the meteorites. Even though we were quite cold and we only observed few meteorites, we had a great time all together watching the stars lying in the grass. 

Après la randonnée nous nous arrêtâmes, boire et manger au Old Nags Head en attendant que la nuit tombe. Nous prîmes ensuite les voitures pour nous garer au pied de Mam Tor et aller observer les étoiles. Le ciel était assez dégagé ce soir là et nous pûmes observer quelques météorites. Malheureusement quelques minutes avant le plus gros du show, les nuages arrivèrent et nous empêchèrent d’observer les météorites. Même si nous avons eu assez froid et observer peu de météorites, nous avons passé un super moment tous ensemble à observer les étoiles allongées dans l’herbe.

Voici les étapes clés pour faire la randonnée:

• From the Old Nags Head pub take the Pennine Way (small path in front of the pub). Arrived at a branch follow the path to the left. Cross the fields until arriving at Upper booth farm and campsite.
• Leave the Pennine Way and take the path that climbs to the top of the summit in the direction of Upper Booth Farm. Follow this path until you reach the top of the summit.
• Up there take the path on the right (if you look the moorlands) and follow it down to the Pennine Way and Edale.

• Depuis le Old Nags Head prendre le sentier Pennine Way (petit chemin en face du pub). Arrivé à un embranchement suivre le chemin vers la gauche. Traverser les champs jusqu’à arriver à Upper booth farm and campsite.
• Laisser le Pennine Way et prendre le chemin qui monte vers le sommet en direction de Upper booth farm. Suivre ce chemin jusqu’à arriver en haut du sommet.
• En haut prendre le chemin sur la droite (si vous êtes dos à la rivière) et le suivre jusqu’à redescendre vers the Pennine Way et Edale.
