Walk around Edale, Peak District, England

A lovely circular walk from the popular village of Edale to Grindslow Knott summit in the Peak District National Park. Dog friendly.

Edale walk Information:

  • Distance: 7.8km
  • Duration: 3h
  • Ascent: 407m
  • Level: Medium
  • Car park: Edale village £5/day
  • Start of the walk: The Old Nags Head pub, Edale
  • Dog friendly: Yes – will have to be on the lead when crossing fields with lifestock.

This year we decided to watch the Perseids meteor shower that passed over Peak District in August. With some friends we wanted to hike during the afternoon and stay late at night in Peak District to observe the stars. We thought that a good place would be around Mam Tor.

So we decided to do a hike from the village of Edale. Edale is a small touristic village not far from Mam Tor (one of the highest peaks of Peak District) and at the foot of Kinder Scout. Since we were a group with people more or less beginners in hiking we had chosen a fairly easy trail but with some tricky parts in the middle.

This hike was very pleasant and ended with some scrambling in order to reach the top of the summit. For those who did not wish to scramble they were able to take the hiking trail that goes to the top. At the top a 360 ° view of the English countryside was waiting for us. We all loved this hike, which is definitely worth it.

After the hike we stopped by the Old Nags Head for some drinks and food while waiting for the night to fall. We then took the cars to park at the foot of Mam Tor and observe the stars. The sky was fairly clear that night and we could observe some meteorites. Unfortunately a few minutes before the shower peak, the clouds arrived and prevented us from observing the meteorites. Even though we were quite cold and we only observed few meteorites, we had a great time all together watching the stars lying in the grass.

Here are the key steps for the hike:

  • From the Old Nags Head pub take the Pennine Way (small path in front of the pub). Arrived at a branch follow the path to the left. Cross the fields until arriving at Upper booth farm and campsite.
  • Leave the Pennine Way and take the path that climbs to the top of the summit in the direction of Upper Booth Farm. Follow this path until you reach the top of the summit.
  • Up there take the path on the right (if you look the moorlands) and follow it down to the Pennine Way and Edale.

Do you know this hike?

  1. Magnifique! J’ai fait la randonnée autour de Mam Tor et Kinder Scout plusieurs fois… J’aimerais bien essayer une trail run dans ce coin-là bientôt! Je ne savais pas pour le Perséides en août… Est-ce que ça arrive à chaque année?

  2. Wonderful. You’ve prompted me to arrange a weekend away at my friend Tim’s house. He’s in Sheffield in easy reach of the Peaks and knows Mam Tor well. I’m overdue a walking weekend in the Peaks!

  3. Nice to meet you and many thanks for the follow. 🙂 🙂 I was just admiring your hike at Monserrat (I would have loved to go when I was in Barcelona, but we only had 5 days and I sacrificed one for Girona 🙂 ). This one seems tailor made for my Jo’s Monday walk feature so would you be happy for me to share it?

  4. What a wonderful hike. So glad I discovered you and the walk via Restless Jo. And how very typically British for the clouds to appear at the critical moment! Thank you so much for sharing with us

      1. Reasonably well as once worked there lots when I was a lot younger than I am now! Really must return now one of these days (and with lots of wet weather gear!!)

      1. Not been for many years, but we liked Mam Tor and Kinder Scout. I liked visiting all the little villages in well-dressing season, and my husband used to go pot-holing. I hated that!
