Three libraries to visit in Manchester, England

Book enthusiasts are spoilt in Manchester thanks to its three absolutely stunning libraries. Each has different architectures, but all three have an unimaginable quantity of books that make it a reader’s paradise.

Central Library

Central Library:

This library is attached to the Town Hall and was built in 1934. With its circular shape this library has an atypical architecture and resisted bombings during the Second World War. After major renovations, the library reopened in March 2014. There are about 120,000 books that the Mancunians can borrow at their convenience. There are also rooms filled with computers, games consoles, musical instruments and so on. This library is free of charge and I recommend you go and see the dome on the first floor. The walls and ceilings are also very nice to see as beautifully decorated.

John Rylands Library

The John Rylands Library:

This library was created by Enriqueta Rylands in commemoration for her husband John Rylands. It opened on 1 January 1900 and has been part of the University of Manchester since 1972. In 2003 it underwent renovation works and officially reopened in 2008. The architecture of this library is neo-Gothic style and in 2012 the library contained 250,000 books and more than a million manuscripts and archives, including a copy of the bible published by Gutenberg.

Chetham’s library:

This small library within the music school was founded in 1653 and is the oldest English library still open to viewing. The walls of this library are of sandstone and the interior recalls the ancient abbeys. This library has more than 100,000 books of which 60,000 were published before 1851. It is less impressive than the other two but still interesting to visit.

My favourite is the John Rylands Library with its huge corridors and ceilings of extreme beauty.

Have you visited these libraries? What is your favourite one?
