Formby beach – Merseyside, England

Yes, sometimes it is sunny and warm in England and it is during these days that we miss the French beaches and our little trips to Pornic. To remedy to this we decided to see how the beaches are in England and for this we went to test the Formby beach.

Formby is located in the North West of Manchester, just above Liverpool. It is one of the most beautiful beaches in this region and is also part of the National Trust. In summer, this beach is very popular and families will come to relax on this huge expanse of golden sand. So there is very often traffic jam to get to the beach and to park.

But Formby is also known for its production of asparagus that you can discover thanks to a small walk in the fields. That day we came with the idea of swimming and that’s what we did.

Find more information about the walk on the National Trust website.

After parking the car, crossing a small forest and climbing the sand dunes that reminded us of the coast of the Landes, we arrived on Formby beach.

Upon arrival, it was low tide and we had to walk a long time before catching sight of the water. This beach is very large, just a small part is monitored. It is therefore recommended to remain close to the lifeguard station. We settled on our towels to enjoy the sun and eat our picnic to the sound of seagulls. After a little while, the water came up pretty quickly. Besides, the rescuers were watching very closely in case some people would to be caught by the high tide.

It was at high tide that we could bath but unfortunately there was not much depth to be able to swim. It’s really different from the French beaches. We were able to bath and the water was cold. People were soaking their feet or just sitting in the water or floated on their back what we did.

So we had a good time and even sunburned.

Do you know this beach? What is your favourite beach in England?

  1. Did you see the red squirrels in the pine woods? There is a red squirrel reserve there. Only ever been in the winter though.I Need to visit in the summer. If you get chance go to Crosby Beach where the ‘Iron Men’ art instillation is.
