A weekend in Somerset, England

In England the last Monday of August is a bank holiday so we had a long weekend and because we had just bought our car we decided to visit the South of England more exactly the Somerset. The Somerset is located in the south west of England. Bath and Taunton being the most famous cities. It is therefore a rather rural department and bordering the Irish Sea.

We booked a room at Liz through the Airbnb website. This bed and breakfast near Taunton is great as well as a delicious breakfast we had access to the indoor pool and Jacuzzi. The first morning we did not know exactly what to do and Liz kindly recommended visiting Dunster Castle. It was the same day that we took the subscription to the National Trust.

Find all the information to visit Dunster Castle on their website.

This property includes the castle as well as a beautiful park and garden and a mill. It takes at least 3 hours to visit the entire property. From the garden you can easily reach the village of Dunster to finish your visit in its streets or in one of its pubs / restaurants / tearoom.

Following this visit we wanted to see the sea and for that we went to the village of Porlock and its small port (porlock beach or weir). After driving on increasingly narrow roads we arrived in this hamlet. Composed of just around 20 houses, a pub, a few shops and boats it is a very relaxing place. We roamed the streets and headed to the pebble beach for a quick walk. We were able to enjoy a beautiful view of the south west coast of England.

The next day, on the way back, we stopped at Glastonbury. Glastonbury is known for its music festival every year in June. It’s also a hippie town and you’ll find lots of strange shops. The town itself is not exceptional, what we wanted to see was Glastonbury Tor. Glastonbury Tor also belongs to the National Trust and is a medieval tower atop a hill. The legend says that Arthur and his knights would have visited it. Even though the day was not very beautiful we could still observe a 360 ° view of the English countryside. The tower is easily accessible through stairs but it is possible to climb through fields for the more adventurous.

It was stunned by this view that our weekend in the Somerset ended. It takes 4 hours by car from Manchester without traffic jam so in reality it’s more around 5-6h especially during holidays and bank holidays. This is definitely a place we would like to return but unfortunately this is far from Manchester. We would also like to go to Cornwall, one day. Meanwhile we visit the North of England which is easier to reach for us and also very pretty.

Have you been in Somerset? If so, how did you find it?
