Walk around Monsal Dale – Peak District, England

As soon as the weather is good we love to go to Peak District for hiking. This time we had a couple of Couchsurfers at home who wanted to do an easy walk to discover the English countryside. So we opted for this walk that starts from the village of Ashford-in-the-water and passes by the Monsal Viaduct.

Dès que le temps le permet nous adorons aller à Peak District pour faire de la randonnée. Cette fois là, nous avions des Couchsurfers à la maison qui avaient envie de faire une promenade pas trop dure pour découvrir la campagne anglaise. Du coup nous avons opté pour cette balade qui part du village de Asford in the water et passe par le viaduc de Monsal.

  • Distance: 9.2 km
  • Duration: 3h30
  • Level: Easy
  • Car park: Asford-in-the-water, behing the church, £1/day

Key steps to do this walk:

  • Exit the car park and turn right onto Vicarage Lane. Go up the street until you find Pennyunk lane. You have to walk through pastures with sheep and cows;
  • Follow the road towards Monsal Head. When arrived in the car park of Monsal Head follow the direction of Monsal Viaduc;
  • Pass the Viaduct and then take the path on the left that goes down and along the river in the direction of Monsal dale;
  • Follow the river until you reach the A6 at Lees Bottom. Cross the A6 and the parking and take the left trail towards Ashford and Taddington. Then follow only the direction of Ashford;
  • After climbing into the forest, follow Ashford and Sheldon on the left;
  • Follow the main road until you find the A6, which you will have to cross to return to the village of Ashford and find the car.
  • Sortir du parking et prendre à droite sur Vicarage Lane. Remonter la rue jusqu’à trouver Pennyunk lane. Il faut traverser plein de pâturages avec des moutons et vaches.
  • Suivre le chemin en direction de Monsal Head. Puis arrivé sur le parking de Monsal Head suivre la direction de Monsal Viaduc.
  • Passer le Viaduc et puis à gauche prenez le chemin qui descend et longe la rivière en direction de Monsal dale.
  • Suivre la rivière jusqu’à arriver à la A6 au niveau de Lees Bottom. Traverser la A6 et le parking et prenez le sentier de gauche en direction de Ashford and Taddington. Puis suivez uniquement la direction de Ashford.
  • Après être monté dans la forêt et suivre la direction de Ashford and Sheldon sur la gauche.
  • Suivre le chemin principal jusqu’à retrouver la A6 qu’il vous faudra traverser pour rentrer dans le village de Asford et retrouver la voiture.

This hike is fairly easy because there is no big ascent. The landscape around the viaduct is very nice.

Cette randonnée est assez facile car il n’y a pas de gros dénivelé et passe au milieu des champs. Le paysage autour de viaduc est très sympa.

  1. Ah la campagne anglaise! C’est tellement joli. 7 ans que je vis en Angleterre et je n’ai toujours pas mis les pieds au Peak District (je suis dans le sud, ça fait un bout) il faudrait caser ça pendant un bank holiday 🙂
