En ce deuxième jour de vacances, nous partîmes voir le volcan del Teide. Nous avions acheté les billets en ligne (27€ par personne) une semaine à l’avance. Nous y sommes allés dès l’ouverture du téléphérique (9h) et ce fut une bonne chose car c’est une activité très prisée des touristes et le téléphérique prend un peu plus de retard à chaque voyage. Du coup, si vous ne voulez pas attendre des heures nous vous conseillons d’y aller le matin.

Le téléphérique vous amène de la base du volcan jusqu’à environ le ¾ du sommet en 15 min. Il y a un parking gratuit à la station de téléphérique mais qui commence à être complet après 10h.

Une fois arrivé en haut, nous sommes partis faire deux petites randonnées de 30 minutes chacune de chaque côté du volcan. Nous avons commencé par le sentier n°11 qui va au mirador de la fortaleza puis sommes allés au n°12 en direction du mirador Pico Viejo. Les vues depuis ces deux sentiers sont époustouflantes, comme dirait Matthieu « c’est à couper le souffle » et du souffle il en faut pour monter en haut du sommet. Certaines personnes ne peuvent donc pas monter ou auront beaucoup de mal à respirer une fois en haut.

Il est possible d’accéder au cratère du volcan par le sentier n°10 mais il faut demander une autorisation gratuite sur ce site. Malheureusement pour nous, nous nous sommes pris trop tard et il n’y avait pas de places disponibles. Pensez à faire cette demande au moins 2 mois à l’avance si vous voulez être sur d’avoir de la place.

Par ailleurs, si vous le souhaitez, vous pouvez redescendre à pied jusqu’en bas du volcan. Vous trouverez les possibles sentiers sur le site du téléphérique. Nous avons choisi l’option facile et avons pris le téléphérique pour redescendre.

Il y a plusieurs routes pour aller au pic du Teide, vu que nous avions un logement à Escalona nous sommes allés au volcan par la TF51 qui part de Playa de las Américas et passe par Arona. Si vous avez le temps faites un détour par le village de Vilaflor. Le Parque Nacional del Teide est juste incroyable. A 8h du matin les routes étaient désertiques, seul au milieu de cette vaste étendue de rochers et de lave sèche, nous étions en extase. Tout au long du chemin, vous trouverez des miradors pour vous arrêter et admirer la vue.

Une fois la visite du volcan de fini nous décidâmes d’aller à la plage et de voir les fameuses plantations de bananier. Vu que ce matin là nous n’étions pas très réveillé il nous a fallu rentrer à la maison pour aller chercher nos maillots de bain avant de repartir direction la plage. Mais si vous êtes plus organisés plusieurs possibilités s’offrent à vous une fois le Volcan visité.

Vous pouvez :

• à la sortie du parking partir sur la gauche sur la TF21 en direction de la valle de la Orotava et de Puerto de la Cruz.
• Vous promener dans le parc national du Teide
• Prendre à droite sur la TF21 en direction de Arona puis la TF38 en direction de Chio et de Guia de Isora (c’est celle la que nous avions prévu de faire).

Donc quand tu n’as pas de tête tu as des jambes et dans ce cas–ci une voiture, nous sommes rentrés à la maison et avons pris l’autoroute pour rejoindre Chio. Finalement, il n’y a pas grand chose à voir à Chio du coup nous avons rebroussé chemin direction Guia de Isora. La route entre le volcan et Chio doit cependant être magnifique. Après Guia de Isora, nous avons pris la TF82 puis avons suivi la direction de la Playa de San Juan. Cette route longe d’immenses serres remplies de bananiers. C’est donc l’endroit parfait pour se rendre compte de l’importance de cette culture sur l’île. D’ailleurs il faut absolument tester les bananes de Ténérife. Pour la petite histoire, avec Matthieu en nous promenant dans les rues de San Juan nous sommes entrés dans un petit magasin qui vendait des bananes (0.5€ le kilo). Nous en avons pris 2 pour les tester puis nous sommes dirigés à la caisse pour les payer. Le caissier nous a répondu : « solo dos ? Esta para mi » (seulement deux, c’est pour moi je vous les offre). Nous sommes donc ressorti du magasin avec nos deux bananes gratuites.

La plage de San Juan est fermé par une digue ce qui fait quelle est classé en piscine naturelle. La ville est touristique mais sans trop et la plage est de sable. Nous avions décidé de passer la fin de l’après-midi sur la plage tranquille puis de manger dans l’un des nombreux restaurants le long de la promenade avant de repartir vers la maison. Malheureusement, nous n’avons pas pu profiter du calme de cette plage pour nous baigner car en plus d’une eau assez fraiche, un banc de méduse avait décidé d’élire résidence.

During our second day in Tenerife, we went to see the Teide volcano. We bought the tickets online (27 € per person) one week in advance. We went there early in the morning (9am) and it was a good idea because as it is a popular activity for tourists and the cable car is more and more late at each trip. So, if you do not want to wait for hours we advise you to go there in the morning.

The cable car takes you from the base of the volcano up to about ¾ of the summit in 15 min. There is free parking at the cable car station but it begins to be full after 10am.

Once we got to the top, we went on two small 30-minute treks on each side of the volcano. We started by trail no. 11 which goes to the mirador of the fortaleza and then went to no. 12 in the direction of the mirador Pico Viejo. The views from these two paths are astonishing, as Matthieu would say “it is breathtaking” and you will need a lot of breath to climb to the top of the summit. Some people therefore cannot climb or will have a lot of trouble breathing once there.

It is possible to reach the crater of the volcano by the trail n ° 10 but it is necessary to request a free authorisation on this site. Unfortunately for us, we did it too late and it was full. Try to ask for this authorisation at least 2 months in advance if you want to be sure to have space.

Moreover, if you wish, you can walk down to the bottom of the volcano. You will find the possible trails on the cable car site. We chose the easy option and took the cable car back down.

There are several roads to go to the peak of Teide, since we had an accommodation in Escalona we went to the volcano by the TF51, which leaves from Playa de las Américas and passes through Arona. If you have time make a detour through the village of Vilaflor. The Parque Nacional del Teide is just amazing. At eight o’clock in the morning the roads were deserted, alone in the middle of this vast expanse of rocks and dry lava, we were in beatitude. Along the way, you will find some mirador to stop and admire the view.

After the visit of the volcano, we decided to go to the beach and have a look at the famous banana plantations. Because that morning we were not very awake we had to go home to get our swimsuits that we had forgotten before heading back to the beach. But if you are more organised several roads are possible for you once you have visited the Volcano.

You can :

• At the exit of the parking take on the left on the TF21 towards the valley of the Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz;
• or go walking through the Teide National Park;
• or turn right onto the TF21 towards Arona and then the TF38 towards Chio and Guia de Isora (this is the one we planned to do).

So we went home and took the motorway to reach Chio. Finally, there is not much to see in Chio so disappointed, we turned back direction Guia de Isora. The road between the volcano and Chio must however be magnificent. After Guia de Isora, we took the TF82 then followed the direction of Playa de San Juan. This road runs along immense greenhouses full of banana trees. It is therefore the perfect place to realise the importance of this culture on the island. Moreover it is absolutely necessary to test the Tenerife’s bananas. For the record, with Matthieu as we strolled through the streets of San Juan we entered a small store selling bananas (0.5 € per kilo). We took 2 to test them and then we went to the cashier to pay them. The casher asked us: “solo dos?” Esta para mi “(only two, it’s for me I offer them). So we came out of the store with our two free bananas.

The beach of San Juan is closed by a seawall, which classified this beach as a natural swimming pool. The town is touristy but not too much and the beach is sand. We decided to spend the end of the afternoon on the quiet beach and then eat in one of the many restaurants on the seafront before heading back home. Unfortunately we could not enjoy the quietness of this beach to bathe because in addition to fairly fresh water, a jellyfish family had decided to elect residence.
