Visit of Biddulph Grange Garden – Staffordshire, England

We went to Biddulph Grange Garden when my mother visited us last September. Because I know she loves flowers, I thought that visiting this English garden by a sunny day would please her.

Biddulph Grange Garden is located in the town of Biddulph, which is about 1 hour drive from Manchester to Peak District. Like all National Trust properties, you will need to pay the entrance fee if you are not a member. The visit of the garden lasts around 2 hours and you will find a small shop to buy the National Trust’s products as well as a cafe to eat on site.

This garden was built by James Bateman, who moved into the property in 1842. James Bateman was a plant collector and employed plant hunters to send him the best specimens from around the world. He lived in the property for 30 years before moving to London and leaving it to his son who decided to sell it in 1872.

Then came the turn of the Heath family to live for 50 years in this property before to sell it in 1922. Biddulph Grange Garden passed through several hands and was even a hospital for a few years. It is now part of the National Trust, which ensures its protection and maintenance.

The garden is divided into several parts, which are: “The Mosaic Parterre”, “The Dalia walk”, “the tunnel in Egypt”, “the lime avenue”, “China” and “Verbena parterre”. Each part of the garden makes you travel in a new country thanks to its vegetation and its decoration.

This garden is really beautiful; it is best to go there when the sun is out and when the flowers are in bloom. It is a pleasant place to visit or just to go for admiring the plants / flowers and relax. I think I don’t need to give more details about this amazing garden the pictures speak for themself.

Do you know this garden? What gardens have you visited in England?

  1. je ne connaissais pas du tout, merci pour la découverte ! Près de Londres j’ai visité les Kew Gardens, et en Irlande les jardins de Kilmore Abbey, qui sont beaux mais je les ai vus sous la pluie … 😦

  2. You inspire me to work harder at my French lessons, so I can read THAT version. Thank you for visiting Under Western Skies. Merci pour votre visite a Under Western Skies (my preposition is probably incorrect. Sorry).
