A day visiting Leeds – Yorkshire, England

We had heard a lot of good reviews about the city of Leeds so one Saturday in January we decided to visit it. It takes less than one hour to go to Leeds by car from Manchester.

Leeds, situated in the West Yorkshire, is known to be the second largest (after London) legal and financial centre in the UK. It is also in Leeds that the first Mark and Spencer shop opened in 1894.

During that morning, we decided to walk from the city centre to the Royal Armouries museum. The walk takes around 30 min at an easy pace and follows the canal during a short time. The area around the museum (Leeds dock) is new and looks like Salford Quays with all these buildings, boats and canal entries.

The Royal Armouries museum, designed by Derek Walker, opened in 1996 to preserve, store and display the national collection of weapons and armour. It is also a place were the children and adults can learn more about the use of arms through daily events. During our visit we had the opportunity to watch a demonstration of the use of a two-hands sword. We were amazed by the richness of the place and the huge collection of weapons. Each century are well represented through the 4 floors of the museum.

Following this visit we walked back to the city centre for a tasty vegetarian lunch at the Roots and Fruits restaurant. Since the past over 20 years, Roots and Fruits have been cooking vegetarian foods for its customers. On that day we ate an homemade houmous, lasagne and feijoada dishes. The food is delicious and for a reasonable price.

After that, we met our artist friends Marie-Charlotte from the blog Macha.me and her lovely family for a visit of the Tetley art gallery. This art contemporary gallery is located in the old building of Tetley Brewery. Each rooms are home of an emerging artist. It is an interesting place to visit.

Then, we wandered for a while in the busy commercial streets of Leeds. We could resume Leeds by the world Arcades. Indeed, Leeds has 5 big arcades full of shops and restaurants. It is then an amazing city for all the shopping lovers. Each arcade has their own personality depending on the century that they were built. The ornaments are sumptuous and it is worth to have a look at each arcade.

During the visit of Kirkgate market, we discovered the teashop Café-tea-aire by Teapot. This shop has a good selection of loose leaf teas and coffee. We bought a green tea “Good Luck”, which is a mix of sencha and fruits flavours and a rooibos tea “Mystic”, which is a strawberries flavour rooibos tea.

Find Café tea aire website here.

To finish the day, we stopped by the vintage tearoom Just Grand for a cup of tea with some cakes. It is a lovely machine with friendly atmosphere and old-fashion decoration.
