During our last stay in Scotland we decided to do one-day boat trip. Among several companies and itineraries, our choice was for Staffa tours and their excursion on the three Islands of Mull, Staffa and Iona.

Lors de notre dernier séjour en Ecosse nous avions décidé de faire une journée en bateau. Parmi plusieurs compagnies et différents itinéraires, notre choix c’est fait pour Staffa tours et leur excursion visitant les îles de Mull, Staffa et Iona.

I have to admit than when I booked online the tickets for four people, I though that the price was quite expensive but in reality it is not. The price includes the tickets for the ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull Island, then the bus from Craignure to Fionnphort, then the boat from Fionnphort to Staffa Island, then the boat from Staffa to Iona and back to Oban.

Je dois avouer que lorsque j’ai pris les tickets sur internet pour 4 adultes, je me suis dit que c’était quand même assez cher mais en réalité pas tellement. Car le prix comprend le ticket AR Oban-Craignure, Mull puis AR Craignure-Fionnphort en bus, Fionnphort-Staffa, Staffa-Iona, Iona-Fionnphort.

The travel was very well organised, if you are lucky and that it is not raining, you will have a beautiful view on the Scottish coast and you would be able to imagine what everyday life on these islands is like.

Le voyage est très bien organisé, si vous êtes chanceux et qu’il ne pleut pas, vous aurez une magnifique vue sur la côte écossaise et vous pourrez de même imaginé ce qu’est la vie au quotidien sur ces îles.

On the day of your excursion, you will have to go to Staffa office to take your tickets. You can park your car at the parking of the Ferry in Oban. In addition to your tickets, the members of Staffa tours will give you a detailed explanation of the proceedings of the trip.

Après avoir réservé par internet plusieurs jours à l’avance vous devrez le jour même de votre excursion vous rendre au bureau de Staffa tours pour prendre vos tickets. Vous pouvez garer votre voiture sur le parking du Ferry à Oban (£5 la journée). En plus de vous donner vos tickets, ils vous expliqueront pas à pas le déroulement de la journée.

10 am: Start with the Ferry from Oban to Craignure on Mull Island. The boat is huge and for those who are seasick, they won’t have any problem. There is a coffee shop and toilets on the ferry.

10h: départ avec le Ferry de Oban pour Craignure sur l’île de Mull. Le bateau est immense et pour ceux qui ne se sentent pas bien en mer vous n’aurez aucun problème. Café et toilette sur le ferry.

After around 1 hour of navigation, you will arrive at Craignure where a bus from the company is waiting to drive you to Fionnphort. The travel is about 1 hour long and will take you across the amazing countryside of Mull Island. The bus driver was very pleasant and told us a lot of funny stories about Mull Island, the inhabitants and the history.

Après environ 1h de navigation vous arrivez à Craignure où un bus de la compagnie vous attend pour vous conduire jusqu’à Fionnphort. Environ 1h de trajet au milieu de magnifiques paysages. Le conducteur de bus, très sympathique, vous racontera l’histoire de Mull et quelques anecdotes sur la vie des gens de Mull. Seul problème, il ne parle qu’en anglais donc prévoyez un traducteur avec vous si votre anglais n’est pas parfait. Le traducteur pouvant être l’un de vos enfants, petits-enfants, amis, téléphone n’importe quoi tant que ça traduit de l’anglais au français.

At Fionnphort, you will embark a smaller boat, which will take you to Staffa Island. You will stay on this Island for around 1 hour and half where you can walk to the Puffins colony and visit the cave. The Puffins are normally visible on Staffa around the middle of April to the middle of August but unfortunately for us this year on the 3^rd of August they had already been.

Arrivé à Fionnphort, vous prendrez un plus petit bateau qui vous emmènera jusqu’à l’île de Staffa. Vous resterez environ 1h30 sur Staffa où vous pourrez visiter la grotte et la colonie de Puffin. Les Puffins sont normalement visible sur Staffa de mi avril à mi août mais malheureusement pour nous cette année au 3 août ils étaient déjà partis.

After visiting Staffa, you will be transported to Iona Island for a visit of also around one and a half hour. There you will find some shops and restaurants.

Suite à la visite de Staffa, vous serez transporté vers l’île d’Iona pour une visite d’environ 1h30. Sur Iona, vous trouverez des magasins et restaurants.

Finally after all that, you will find your way back to Oban and arrive around 7:45 pm.

Enfin après toutes ces visites, vous reprendrez le chemin inverse pour arriver vers Oban aux alentours de 19h45.

Despite the incessant rain, we all appreciated this excursion. Staffa Island is something very exceptional and to be absolutely visited. I would have been happy to see the little puffins but as we say we can’t control nature. Iona Island is also interesting to visit even though it is less atypical than Staffa. Nevertheless it is not less astonishing thanks to the people living on it all year around. The gardens with a view on the sea are well maintained, relax the traveller and give them the impression that time has stopped. Moreover, it is easy to imagine the hardship task that is to do their shopping or everyday needs. When living in the big city where everything is close to us, we forgot how in someplace such very basic things as buying furniture or food could take a full travel day.

Malgré la pluie incessante, nous avons tous vraiment apprécié cette excursion. L’île de Staffa est quelque chose d’exceptionnel et à absolument visiter. J’aurais vraiment aimé voir ces petits puffins mais bon comme on dit on ne contrôle pas la nature. Iona est aussi intéressante en elle-même, même si elle est moins atypique que Staffa. Elle n’en est pas moins stupéfiante grâce aux personnes qui l’habitent à l’année. Les jardins avec vue sur la mer sont bien entretenus, apaisent le voyageur et lui donnent l’impression que le temps c’est arrêté. De plus, il est facile de s’imaginer l’épreuve qu’est pour eux d’aller faire les courses et autres besoins quotidiens. En vivant dans les grandes villes à porté de tout, nous oublions que dans certains endroits aller acheter des meubles ou autres choses peut prendre une journée entière.
