Mid october we had a great saturday weather wise so we decided to drive to Ambleside to enjoy a day out in the fells. I had this walk on my list for a moment so it was the right time to do it.

Parking at Ambleside, we walked towards Rothay Park to cross the river Rothay and join the path going to Loughrigg fell. However, we left the more touristy path to make a detour by Lily tarn and Todd Crag before joining the large path that goes down to Loughrigg tarn. We only saw a couple of walkers on that first section of the walk, which was nice. The path to Lily tarn is moderately steep and that little tarn is worth the detour.

The sun was shining and it was a beautiful autumn day, even a bit warm. On the large path we followed a couple of others walkers before realising that they were not going in the direction we wanted. So we had to retrace our steps to take the path going up Loughrigg fell. There were several walkers in the fell that day and some of them were going to the summit of Loughrigg fell.

After enjoying the view, we walk down towards the valley, the path was less busy and felt more remote. After a few kilometers, we found again the large path that we took to walk back to Ambleside. Once in Ambleside, we stopped at the play area to eat our sandwiches and to allow Marcus to play. It was fully of families and it was really nice to see everyone enjoying the sun. After a quick walk through the center to buy an apple pie we headed to the garden center to show Marcus the Christmas decorations.

The fells are so beautiful, aren’t they? I love the changing colours on the moors.

They are so different depending on the seasons which means that you can do the same walk several times a year and see different things. Each season has its own charm I think.

I think so, too! I actually saw my first almond blossom of Spring here yesterday. Not usually around till mid-December.

A good walk Melodie, with great views for relatively little effort (but I know from experience, too, that there are some steep sections!) Nice to see some blue in the sky 😀.

Thank you Mike. It is nice indeed to have some days like that and yes short but steep path to reach the top 😊.

I walked up Loughrigg Fell earlier this year. A really nice walk which is reasonably accessible. Some nice views on the way up.

I am happy to hear that you liked that walk too. It is a classic one with a lot of people doing it but still enjoyable I think.

Yes, the hills don’t have to be very tall to give you some of the best views. 👍😊

I agree and I also like walking in valleys or around lakes. Don’t need to go high to find great walks.

Beautiful autumn colours, and I love the shots with mist. We did this walk a few years ago, though not sure about the detour to Lily Tarn.

Thank you Anabel. I had told Matt that it was going to be a nice sunny day so when we started the walk in the mist he thought I had lied to him 😂😂😂. But the sun came as we walked up. It is a little tarn so easily missed.
