End of Seascale Golf Course

Beginning of April, we decided to go exploring Seascale. One of my colleague had told me that he preferred to go walking on Seascale beach rather than on St Bees beach as the beach is longer and less busy.

As usual I was trying to plot a circular walk when I realised that there was on the map this little wood near Ponsonby tarn, which look likes an interesting place to visit. Doing further research online I discovered that there is a cycle / pedestrian path called Viking Way linking Seascale to Gosforth. With all of that in mind I plotted this walk.

Seascale beach

We parked at Seascale beach car park. There is a huge children playground area by the car park. We started by walking on the beach towards Sellafield nuclear site. We then join the gate to cross the train line and arrived at the edge of Seascale golf course that we had to cross. Walkers and dogs are allowed on the golf course but they need to stay on the waymarked footpath. Also be careful with the golf balls that fly close by to the footpath.

Lake District summits in the distance

We crossed several fields before arriving at Seascale Hall where we encountered a massive black horse that the owner had put in the enclosed footpath. Fortunately, we found a gate leading to an empty field, as the field on the other side of the footpath was full of sheeps, and managed to escape by the gate before the horse reached us. We followed the side of the field until its end where we could see another gate. Unfortunately this time, the gate was closed and Matt and I had to climb it while Skye managed to squeeze under it. It was a bit annoying that they had put this horse on this public footpath as it wasn’t really possible to pass safely the horse by staying on the footpath and with a dog it was a nervous situation.

Newton Manoir

After this little adventure we took the direction of Calder following the road. Then we took right in the direction of Lingbank plantation. On the way, we saw a little stone circle in a field. It wasn’t accessible as it was on private land and surrounded by sheeps. We walked a bit in Lingbank plantation before joining Newton Manoir. We followed that lane until the end where we took right in the direction of Fleming Hall. They had some works in the farm so we struggle to find the way to the footpath, which we finally did. We followed that lane until Newton Wood and emerged on the Viking way that we followed back until Seascale.

For those of you doing geocaching there are several geocaches on the Viking way.

Si vous aimez faire du Géocaching, il y a quelques caches le long de Viking Way.

It was a nice little and easy walk; however sometimes the paths were not really visible so we got a bit lost.

Do you know any other nice walks in that area?

  1. Several years ago I spent some time working over that way which meant had to stay away from home. As it was summer with long days, and I tended to finish late afternoon I had some time in the evenings to do some exploring. I remember walking down to the beach, but I think it was on the other side of Sellafield.
