Discovering the beautiful Annandale whisky distillery with a guided tour of the distillery and lunch at their restaurant. The restaurant is dog friendly and there is a lovely terrace in summer to enjoy food outside.

During our weekend in the south of Scotland, we discovered a picturesque and charming whisky distillery: The Annandale  Distillery. It is one of today few distilleries in the Lowlands that produce quality whisky. It is located in Annan in the Dumfries and Galloway region.

The distillery has been completely restored and this restoration started in 2007. During the visit, we were able to observe some photos showing when the buildings were in ruins taken before a couple of wealthy philanthropists decided to buy the property and rebuild it. According to the guide, they spent £14 million to renovate the site and the result is absolutely admirable. We were able to visit a brand-new distillery which has kept its historic character. The visit is worth it just for that.

The basic visit is around 1h and can be technically too simple, which will not delight whisky purists. However, we were able to taste 3 glasses of whisky and 2 glasses of what I would call “barley brandy” and all for £ 12.50, which is a good deal. There are also other longer tours for whisky enthusiasts. The first glass of whisky was a “blended” and had a fairly fruity which left a good burn taste in mouth. The other two whisky were single malt and are the first two whisky from the distillery after 90 years without any production. The first one is called “Man of Words”. It is a whisky with a fruity taste with aromas of vanilla and citrus. The second is called “Man of Swords”. This is a very peaty whisky which is close to the taste of Islay peaty whisky for connoisseurs. These Whisky are young and very strong, 63.5% exactly. They are definitely refined and good but I think they deserve to age a little longer. I will just have to come back in 6 years … As for the tasting of what I trivially called “Barley brandy”, I am not convinced. The distillery decided to bottle the liquid directly from the alembic to make a quick profit. To me, it’s just an almost 70% white liquid with no particular taste. They sell it to be used in cocktails, which is not my cup of tea! However, if you like cocktails, why not give it a try.

If you around Dumfries and Galloway, I recommend you visit the distillery. The price is very affordable, and you will discover young and promising whisky. You can also eat on site in the distillery’s brasserie.
