During our stay in the Cairngorms National Park we decided to spend a day in the small village of Braemar and to hike to the top of Morrone Peak.

Braemar is one of the most famous villages in the Cairngorms because the royal family’s castle, Balmoral Castle, is nearby. The village is also surrounded by peaks making it an excellent base for hikers. There are also few shops and restaurants.

We decided to start the day by hiking to the top of Morrone. Morrone is 860m above sea level, it is classified as Corbett, and offers views of the surrounding peaks and the village of Braemar. The trail is very wide and visible and you can not get lost because there is plenty of people going up. We hiked in the opposite direction of the flow of tourists because I wanted to finish the hike by a detour in the reserve of Morrone Birkwood. That day the sky was clear and sunny which allowed us to appreciate the true beauty of this place.

After the hike we went to eat in the pub of the Fife Arms Hotel which had been recommended by our Airbnb host. The meal was a real treat. Matthieu took a plate of smoked salmon as a starter and then a dish of haggis and profiteroles for dessert. I tested their mushroom risotto and a lemon poset with lavender cookies. The place is very chic and the decor eccentric. There are several reception rooms with different menu. Apparently there are guided tours of the hotel to see all the artwork on display. The little we saw surprised and amazed us. The price of the dishes is very reasonable (in their pub part at least, the flying stag). And it’s our turn to recommend it to you if you are in the area.

Find Fife Arm hotel website here.

To go hiking: from the car park take the road that goes towards the golf club. Continue straight on this road, cross the golf course and continue straight for a very long time. Then arrived at the level of a small car park on the right and a big antenna take the path which goes up while furrowing on the side of the mountain. Continue straight ahead to the top of Morrone. Then go back down the opposite path to the bottom. At a road intersection take towards the circular path of the reserve or then towards the center of Braemar if you have enough. Continue on this path until you reach a large ladder and take  right before it going back to Braemar. Continue straight to the car park.
