Visit of Dunbar and St Abbs villages – Scotland

For Matthieu’s 30 years old I wanted to offer him a weekend in Scotland. As he loves whisky I thought it would be an nice opportunity to visit at the same time a part of Scotland that we didn’t know and a distillery. I opted for a weekend in Dunbar which is located in East Lothian, South East of Scotland, near Edinburgh, after finding a great Airbnb, with jacuzzi in the garden. After some research on the Internet I saw that there was a beautiful nature reserve near the small village of St Abbs (Scottish border) and the Glenkinchie distillery which was not very far. The plan of the weekend was easy: hike on Saturday and whisky tasting on Sunday.

In this first article, I will tell you more about our visit of the villages of St Abbs and Dunbar and two small but charming hikes that we did on Saturday.

After a good night and breakfast in our Airbnb, we left on Saturday morning heading to St Abbs and the St Abbs Head Nature Reserve. This nature reserve is part of the Scottish National Trust. We hiked about 6 km from the National Trust car park and along the cliffs that dive into the ocean. The views along the trail are breathtaking. We also observed the bird colonies circling around the rocks. This easy access hike was a great discovery for us.

After our morning walk, we went to visit the small village of St Abbs. We had a picnic by the harbour which is very charming but there is also a café that serves local dishes. Then in the early afternoon we left St Abbs, for a walk near Tyninghame Beach.

This place was recommended to us by our Airbnb hosts. You first have to cross a forest before reaching the mouth of the Tyne and the beach of golden / black sand. From the beach there is a beautiful view of the offshore islets. It is a place very frequented by locals.

Dunbar

To end the day, we went to visit the village of Dunbar and its beautiful harbour where we saw by chance a seal swimming.

St Abbs

We enjoyed visiting this part of Scotland as the scenery was beautiful and we were able to escape for a weekend. But it is true that this place looks a bit like the north of England because the terrain is mostly flat and there is no huge forest and loch that are so typical of Scotland. The south of Scotland is hardly visited by tourists and yet there are plenty of places to visit and the little we saw made us want to come back to discover more.

Have you ever visited the South East of Scotland?

  1. Looks wonderful! It sounds like you had a great time. And Airbnb are such a useful site. You can get some good bargains! I have been to Dumfries and Galloway which is in S W Scotland, near Stranraer, so maybe a bit further north than you. X

    1. It was really good indeed and lucky with the weather. I only use Airbnb when I travel and always had good experiences. I need to visit Dumfries and Galloway it is around 1h30 from where I live.
