For this first hike of 2019, we wanted to do one not too steep, too long or too hard.

Last summer we hiked from Whinlatter’s visitor center to the top of Lord’s Seat and Barf. So, this time we did the other side of Lord’s Seat from Darling How plantation thenup to Lord’s Seat then Broom Fell and down by Graystones. Unfortunately, the weather was not good, and we could not see much from the top of Lord’s Seat. Only the descent to Graystones can be difficult because it is quite steep. The path is clearly visible all along and can be muddy in rainy weather.

Here are the essential steps to do this hike:

  • From the parking, take the path towards Lord’s Seat, continue for a while before taking a small path on the left that goes down towards the river.
  • Cross the river and follow the path, it will cross the river 4 times during this part of the trail. The path will begin to climb and when arriving at mid-height near a broken wall take the path to the right.
  • Follow it until you reach the top of Lord’s Seat. Once at the top you can either go to the right in the direction of Barf and then retrace your steps to finish this hike or take directly to the left towards Broom Fell.
  • Once at the top of Broom Fell take the direction of Graystones. At Graystones take the path down to Darling How Plantation.
  • At the bottom, turn left then cross the bridge (before crossing the bridge, you can go straight to see Spout waterfall, then retrace your steps). From the bridge, continue straight, climb the small hill to reach the parking.
