The Heights of Abraham – Derbyshire, England

Every summer my company organises a camping trip for its employees and this year the campsite selected was located in Derbyshire, in the south of the Peak District in the village of Riddings.

Find the campsite information here.

After 4 hours drive we arrived on Friday night at the campsite where we joined my colleagues. After having pitched the tent, ate a little in front of the campfire we went to bed to attack well rested this festive weekend.

On Saturday morning we started the day with a breakfast in the Birdcage tea room in Alfreton. This tea room was super cute with its very kitsch decoration and filled with bird paintings. The food was quite simple but the place is worth the detour.

My company offered us a choice of activities and from that list we chose to visit The Heights of Abraham. So, after breakfast we headed towards the village of Matlock Bath. Matlock Bath is a former seaside destination that in the 19th century saw the visit of hundreds of tourists who came to spend the day in the several spas of the city. Nowadays Matlock is still a very popular village thanks to the parks: Gulliver Kingdom, Heights of Abraham.

The heights of Abraham is a private estate that contains two ancient underground mines and some beautiful views of the surrounding valley. The park is accessible from the bottom of the city by a cable car.

Find all the information to visit The Heights of Abraham here.

It is in 1470 that the lead mines began to be exploited and this for the next 300 years. But the time came when the lead imported from other countries was cheaper than mining it. Thus, the mines experienced a period of recession and to cope with the crisis of the 19st century, the mine workers had the idea to provide guided tours of the mines. This attracted a lot of tourists that were entertain by stories of monsters living in the caves. It was in 1974 that the current owner of the Heights of Abraham bought the estate and decided to preserve it and make it more prosperous. He put in place the cable car, repaired the old buildings and made the mines even more accessible to tourists.

The park is now quite touristy and the history of the mines and their guide tours are very interesting. I would not say that I was amazed by this place but I had a good time because I learned a lot about the mine and the workers. The view is also very beautiful. I think it’s a nice place to spend a family day with children.

After this visit we headed back to the campsite and to the long night that was waiting for us.

Have you ever been to Matlock bath or to the Heights of Abraham?

  1. I used to visit Derbyshire with some friends about 20 years ago when our children were young. I remember how funny the children thought it was to rock the cable car as we travelled across the heights above the valley. We adults didn’t find it so hilarious. It’s a lovely part of the world.
