Mid-June we spent a weekend in Glasgow. My long time friend told me that she was in Glasgow for a few days for a conference so we agreed to meet over there to spend the weekend together. With Matthieu we had never been to Glasgow so it was a good excuse to organise a weekend.

My friend wanted to go hiking around Loch Lomond so after some research we decided to do Ben Lomond. Ben Lomond is located on the east side of Lock Lomond and rises at 974 meters above sea level. The climb from the village of Rowardennan is very well indicated with a fairly wide and quite touristy trail. It must be recognised that even though at first sight the hike seems not too hard given the number of people doing it, it is still very difficult because the slope is quite steep. For me it was one of the hardest hikes I did. Matthieu found it harder compared to the ones we are used to, but he still did it with his usual fast pace. I’m happy to have done it because the view from the top is just beautiful. It is better to go in clear weather otherwise it is not worth doing all this effort for nothing. From the car park, follow the tourist trail that leaves from behind the toilets.

This trail goes straight to the top of Ben Lomond you cannot get lost. Once up some people went down using the same path to the car. We decided to take the path that goes to the other side to do a loop. The beginning is very rocky and not very accessible but once the first part of it done it becomes much easier. There is only one path to go downhill so you cannot get lost.

To reward us for our efforts we stopped to eat an ice cream in the small village of Balmaha. The Oaks Tree Inn Tea Room has 5-6 handmade ice cream flavours. For me I took a scoop of Chai tea ice cream that was succulent. The taste of chai tea was well balanced, subtle and not disgusting, a real treat. Matthieu chose a scoop of chocolate mint and a scoop of traditional (a kind of cream / vanilla ice cream) that were also very good.

We then drove back to Glasgow to spend the evening with friends. That night we were too tired to go to the restaurant but the day before we went to the Mono Cafe which is a vegan bar / restaurant. I wanted to introduce it to you because this restaurant had been advised by a colleague and we were not disappointed. As a starter with Matthieu we shared a dish of hummus and a dish of fried artichokes. Then we both took a seitan burger. My friend had stuffed vine leaves and a mac and cheese dish. While her other two friends had a pizza and a salad. We tested all the dishes that were all succulent, full of flavour and hearty enough. They also serve beers made in Glasgow. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the service quite fast. It was a really good experience.

The next morning we visited the centre of Glasgow a little bit before going home. I think we will go back to Glasgow because we did not have time to see everything and we would like to do more hikes in the area.

Have you ever been to Glasgow? Have you ever done Ben Lomond?

  1. Yes, I have been to Glasgow once or twice 😉! I’ve also climbed Ben Lomond many times, though haven’t always had the beautiful view, sometimes in mist and once in deep snow which I would never do again. As you say Mono is good for vegetarians/vegans, as is the 13th Note across the road.
