This circular hike starts from Manor Park in the village of Glossop. Only the first climb is a bit hard but once up the way is practically flat for quite a while. The descent can also be difficult for people who have knee pain because there is not really a path (or we have not found it). From the top you will have a magnificent view over Glossop valley. At least that’s what I think because unfortunately for us it was foggy when we did this hike and we could not see much during the climb.

It seems that there would be an airplane carcass to see also not very far from the top of Higher Shelf Stones. This aircraft is a former US Air Force bomber that crashed in 1948. Some walkers say they saw ghosts around the aircraft. We did not see any plane or ghosts even though with this fog it was a perfect atmosphere for ghosts. Too bad, next time maybe.

In spite of this weather, we were not the only ones to try the adventure and we even crossed two people with bikes. The brave ones, I already had difficulty to climb the first hill by myself so I would not have seen me climbing it pushing a bike in addition.

So here are the key steps to do this hike:

  • From Manor Park parking, cross the park, pass the cafe and toilets and exit on Manor Park Road. Turn left onto this street and go up to Shepley Street. Take this street and continue straight until the asphalt road ends. Continue on the dirt road. There is a small farm that sells 6 eggs for £1, we took some back home after the walk. They were very good;
  • Arrived at a gate take the small gate on the left, which goes up to the top of the hill. Crossed the fields by following the path until arriving at the top. Once up, always go straight until the two slopes of the mountain meet;
  • Once the river disappear a little bit, you have to cross it (there is a small path but not very visible) to go towards Higher Shelf Stones. Once in Higher Shelf Stones you will have a wonderful view on the other side of the mountain;
  • Turn right at Higher Shelf Stones and go down the mountain. It is there that it becomes a bit difficult because there is not a clear path and it is at a guess. Keep going down until you reach the farm Mossy Lea Farm (on the left) then take the same path to reach your car.

Do you know this hike?

      1. We live quite close to the Derbyshire border, so it’s a relatively short hop for us 🙂 When we feel up to a longer journey, now the kiddies are no longer toddlers, we’ve just started exploring Yorkshire which is beautiful too.
