The United Kingdom is home to 15 National Parks (10 in England, 2 in Scotland and 3 in Wales), representing a covered area of 23,138 km2 (around 10% of Great Britain). It also contains 46 National Landscapes and 40 National Scenic Area (NSA) in Scotland. AONB and NSA are designated as “exceptional landscape whose distinctive character and natural beauty are precious enough to be safeguarded in the national interest”. AONB represents 18% of the countryside (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) and NSA cover 13% of Scottish land.
