The Real Crete: A Road Trip Off the Beaten Path

Dreaming of the perfect Mediterranean escape? In 2016, we spent 10 days travelling through Crete, discovering why this legendary destination is the crown jewel of the Greek archipelago. As the largest and most populous of the Greek islands— and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean — Crete offers a world of contrast, from the vibrant, popular hubs of the north to the iconic shores of Elafonissi Beach and the bohemian caves of Matala in the south.

To make the most of our journey without spending all day behind the wheel, we strategically booked accommodations across the island in Kissamos, Malia, and the surrounding areas. This allowed us to soak up the Mediterranean sun while diving deep into everything the island has to offer.

Whether you are avid walkers looking to conquer the majestic Lefka Ori (White Mountains) in Chania, the central Psiloritis (Mount Ida), or the eastern Dikti range, Crete’s rugged landscapes are a hiker’s paradise. For History and Art lovers, the island’s layers of empire-influenced architecture and ruins are endlessly fascinating. Combine that with a world-renowned, diverse gastronomy, and you have the recipe for an unforgettable road trip.

We hope our experience helps you plan your own perfect Cretan holiday!
