Note: Travels done in 2022, 2023
This year we have decided to go back to France for a whole month (April-May) to visit our family as with Covid and the multiple lockdowns we had seen our family since summer 2019.
Of course it was unthinkable for us to travel to France without taking Skye with us. So we decided to travel by car and take the ferry.
I was a bit stressed because it was our first time traveling in ferry and with a dog but finally everything was fine. And we are now looking to take more often the ferry to travel to Europe.
So I decided to do a list of all the paperwork you will need to travel to France. Be careful, regulations change depending on the country you are visiting.
Information to enter with a dog in France:
Verification of the dog paperwork will be done at the check in of the car in the UK side. You might also be checked by the French border at arrival (we were lucky and they didn’t check us).
- Microchip: Dogs have to have a microchip and the controller will ask you to scan the chip of your dog at the check in of the car. Check before travel that the address on your dog’s chip is the most up-to-date.
- Papers: Your dog will need a passport or an Animal Health Certificate. The Animal Health Certificate is to be done by your vet no earlier than 10 days before traveling (however you need to give more notice to your vet so they can prepare that document before your visit). This document is only valid for one country and for 3 months.
- Vaccines: you need to provide a copy of your dog’s vaccine, which have to be up to date. Additionally your dog will need to be vaccinated for the rabies. This vaccine needs to be done no later than 21 days before traveling and is valid for 3 years.
Information to enter with a dog in United Kingdom:
Verification of the dog paperwork will be done at the check in of the car in the French side. You might also be checked by the English border at arrival (we were lucky and they didn’t check us).
- Same requirements as to enter France.
- Additionally your dog will need to be given a worm pill. This need to be done at a French vet between 5 and 1 days before traveling to UK. The French vet will fill all the paperwork certifying that your dog received that pill.
There is no quarantine for dogs once arriving in France or in UK.
Dogs must be at least 6 months year old and there is a maximum of 5 dogs traveling with you.
Dog Friendly Transports between United Kingdom and France:
We decided to travel by ferry but it is also possible to take the Eurotunnel under the Manche. We took the ferry with Brittany Ferries as they have dog-friendly cabines on their Portsmouth-Cherbourg line. Be careful not all ferry companies or lines have dog-friendly cabines and most of the time your dog will have to stay in your car or go in the ferry kennel.
Be careful all dogs ( size independent) will have to carry a muzzle when in the ferry (not in the cabine).

Our experience travelling between UK and France with our dog:
As I was saying at the beginning of the post, I was a bit stressed before this travel because I was afraid that something goes wrong during the check in of Skye at the harbour. But every thing was perfectly fine and the controller was very nice and patient while waiting that we give all the paperwork needed.
The controller gave us a badge to put on the car front mirror to show that we had a dog in the car. This allows them to direct all the cars with dogs on the same waiting lines and to let embark all the cars with dogs at the same time and park them in the ferry close to the dog-friendly cabines. This meant that unfortunately we had to wait a lot before embarking on the UK side as we did our check in around 21h and only parked the car around 22h45 for departure at 23h. On the return journey, we were the first to embark which was quite nice.
Once on the ferry, the path to go to the cabine was well indicated which allowed us to rapidly bring Skye inside and to protect him against the noise as he was a bit stressed by all these people and dogs. As well he is not used to wearing a muzzle, which didn’t help with his stress. In the ferry, the dogs are only allowed in the cabines and the on-board dog promenade.
Once in the cabine, Skye was fine and settle rapidly. I had put his bed between the two bunk beds and he slept like a baby. Before travelling I was afraid that he will be sick but he snored all night and I was the one who couldn’t sleep. The next morning, we took him on the on-board dog promenade for his business; however he wasn’t really reassured and didn’t want to do. One advise have a long walk before and after taking the ferry.
I don’t regret paying more for the dog-friendly cabine as it allowed us to be more relax knowing that Skye was with us. The cabine contains four beds, a TV, a bathroom with shower and for some of them a window. They provided bed linen and towels. Skye even had a bag full of goodies. Having a cabine also allowed us to rest before our drive in France.

Poor Skye snoring all night – I’m not surprised you couldn’t sleep! I like travelling by ferry, but have never done it with a dog. Ferries to the Hebrides are day time, but we have been overnight to Shetland and (many years ago) Denmark and The Netherlands. We took our car to France once, so we must have gone on a ferry but I don’t remember anything about it.

I would like to go to Shetland. I think I read somewhere that they have 2 dog-friendly cabines on the ferry. Denmark and Netherlands are on my list.

Skye was very good during the entire journey. He was very patient as we left cumbria around 8 am and only arrived at Matt’s parents around 1 pm the day after.

This must have been a long journey, from Cumbria to France via Portsmouth. Well done! I didn’t even know they have dog friendly cabins, but it makes a perfect sense. So many people want to travel with their pets. Have you looked at Newhaven – Dieppe ferries? I would love to visit Normandy and Brittany and this seems like the easiest route, providing one has a car 🙂

It was good that we could sleep on the ferry that allowed us to cut the journey in two. We did look at the Newhaven-Dieppe but I think if I remember well the dogs have to stay in the car during the crossing. Also for us Dieppe was a long drive to Matt’s parents and we would have had to pay an extra night in a hotel as the ferry time where not easy for us. The best for us was Portsmouth-Cherbourg as we could drive in UK during the day, have plenty of time to arrive for the ferry at 11pm, sleep on the ferry and then Cherbourg to Nantes is around 3h so by lunch time the next day we were with our family.

Sounds like Skye took the journeys inhis stride. We have only used daytime ferries when traveling to the Outer Hebrides, Calmac are very good for that. Not sure we would take Hugo abroad , however Skye is obviously part French because of his human parents, I think he will be one well travelled pet!

Thank you for the tip on the Calmac ferries. The Scottish islands are on my list of places to visit and hopefully we will be able to visit them with Skye.
We like bringing him with us when travelling. He is always so happy to discover new places.

How lovely to visit France for an entire month. It must have been nice to see your family in person again. Glad to hear that you had a smooth ferry ride and that you had no issues bringing your dog.

It was really nice. We are thinking to do it maybe every 3-4 years as we want to visit UK and other european countries.
